Expert Session on “Learning the Law with AI” delivered by Dr. Praveen Tripathi, Registrar and Associate Professor, Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The National Law University, Tripura organized an expert session on “Learning the Law with AI” on 21st August 2025. The resource person for the session was Dr. Praveen Tripathi, Registrar and Associate Professor, Dharamshastra National Law University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The session was attended by LL.M and undergraduate students of the University.
Dr. Tripathi began his lecture by introducing the participants to the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal education and practice. He elaborated on the different kinds of AI models currently prevalent, with special emphasis on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications, which combine large language models with verified data sources to improve accuracy and reliability.
One of the key highlights of the session was his detailed, hands-on demonstration of NotebookLM, a cutting-edge AI platform. The Students were guided through the practical aspects of using this tool for research, summarization, and knowledge retrieval. Dr. Tripathi stressed that while such AI-based platforms could significantly enhance learning and research efficiency, their use required careful scrutiny to avoid hallucinations (false or fabricated outputs) a common limitation of generative AI systems.
He cautioned students against over-reliance on generative AI models for academic or legal work, underlining that AI should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for human judgment. According to him, the real value of AI lies in enabling students and legal professionals to save time, refine research, and gain access to organized information—while preserving the critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical skills that are central to the discipline of law.
The interactive session encouraged students to reflect on the ethical and intellectual dimensions of technology in legal education. Dr. Tripathi emphasized that the integration of technology in the legal field is inevitable, but it must be approached with responsibility, discernment, and a commitment to academic integrity.
Dr. Tripathi’s insights left the students with a balanced perspective—acknowledging the immense possibilities of AI while reiterating the indispensability of human reasoning and legal acumen. The session was coordinated by Dr. Jayanta Dhar, Assistant Professor, NLUT, and Mr. Nehru, Ph.D. Scholar (Full-time).
