Faculty Interaction with Prof. N.L. Mitra: Rethinking Pedagogy and Legal Education

The faculty members of NLU Tripura had the privilege of engaging in an enriching interaction with Prof. (Dr.) N.L. Mitra, the Founding Vice-Chancellor of NLU Jodhpur and former Director of NLSIU Bangalore. Drawing from his vast academic and administrative experience, Prof. Mitra shared invaluable insights on pedagogy and the philosophy of legal education. He emphasized the importance of developing a deeper understanding of legal principles, by encouraging faculty members to explore where the law resides in various contexts rather than merely focusing on what the law is. His guidance stressed the need to develop analytical thinking, encourage meaningful engagement with legal texts, and adopt an interactive approach to teaching within subject areas. Prof. Mitra also highlighted the significance of a multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning, reminding that no discipline stands alone. Every field draws strength from others, and therefore, faculty across disciplines must engage in collaborative efforts to create a learning environment that is both supportive and inclusive for all students.
