Special Lecture on Law of Torts (BALLB 1st YEAR)

October 1, 2024

The Law of Torts or Tort Law is a core course prescribed by the Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education, 2008 and it is primarily concerned with redressal of wrongful civil actions by awarding damages. Our National Law University Tripura has introduced this paper for the first year in BALLB program with the purpose to expose its students to the traditional as well as the changing notions of tortious liability. Based on this learning outcome, a two day special lecture series arranged at the presence of  Dr.Parikshit Sirohi, Assistant Professor (Senior Scale), Faculty of Law, University of Delhi at the campus of NLU Tripura on 30th September and 1st October 2024 respectively. During the lecture, the concepts of strict liability and absolute liability were discussed in depth. The classic case is Rylands v. Fletcher (1868) discussed with its some exceptions; like as if the damage is caused by an act of God, the victim’s own fault, or if there was statutory authority. Later on, Sir has briefed the landmark India case law, popularly known as M.C. Mehta v. Union of India (1987), where the Supreme Court established this principle in the context of environmental and industrial hazards. These lectures highlighted various distinctions and provided real-life case studies to explain their application in modern legal scenarios.
