One-day National workshop on “Access to Medicines: 20 Years of Product Patent Protection, Challenges and the Way Forward: An introduction to Pharma Sahi Daam App”

The Centre for Intellectual Property Studies (CIPS) at the National Law University Tripura (NLUT) has taken this initiative by collaborating with Third World Network (TWN) to develop a narrative on “Access to Medicines: 20 Years of Product Patent Protection, Challenges and the Way Forward: An introduction to Pharma Sahi Daam App” . The primary goal of CIPS is to spearhead rigorous academic research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in IP law, policy making, and practice. Based in the Global South, TWN engages in critical analysis, advocacy, and capacity building around sustainable development, environmental justice, trade, intellectual property including Patent regime and human rights, especially from a developing countries’ perspective. The Tripura State Pharmaceutical Price Monitoring & Resource Unit (TPMRU) operates under the guidance of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India. It was established with the mission to ensure the availability, affordability, and accessibility of essential medicines to every citizen of Tripura, in compliance with the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. In this context, this workshop will provide a platform for dialogue between legal scholars, health economists, public health experts like medicos, pharmacists, drug inspectors, researchers, academicians & faculties and students to evaluate the socio-legal, economic and ethical dimension of patent protection framework in health sectors.
Workshop’s Objective:
• Critically assess the impact of 20 years of patent protection regime in national and international domain.
• Examine the interface between public health and patent regime on domestic pharmaceutical production and generic competition.
• Deliberate future strategies and reforms on needful patent regime and public health policy for access to medicines.
• Promote collaboration between academia, civil society and public institutions on shaping the jurisprudence of the patent regime and heated down global debate on Right to health and Access to Medicines.
• Educate consumers on their rights and available tools to check medicine prices on Pharma Sahi Daam App and reduce unethical pricing practices and improve access to essential drugs.
