Centre for Intellectual Property Studies (CIPS)

The Centre for Intellectual Property Studies (CIPS) at the National Law University Tripura is dedicated to advancing research in Intellectual Property (IP) law. Its primary goal is to spearhead rigorous academic research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in IP law, policy making, and practice.

VISION

The CIPS achieves this through hosting seminars, workshops, and conferences, and by assembling a team of distinguished legal scholars, policymakers, and industry professionals known for their expertise and cross-disciplinary approach. Through these initiatives, it seeks to enhance the understanding and critical evaluation of key areas in IP law.

MANDATE

The evolution of Intellectual Property (IP) law has introduced new IP subjects and complex issues, leading to a need for practitioners to focus on specialized areas within the field. To address this, the Centre aims to streamline the learning process for IP law and policy through academic courses and programs. It also concentrates on researching the relationship and collaboration between industry and academia, identifying gaps in knowledge that affect technology sharing and joint research. The Centre’s additional objectives include:

  • Intellectual Discourse: To offer a platform for discussion, debate, and education on IP laws, and enhancing IP literacy among all stakeholders.
  • Academic Research and Policy Response: To conduct academic research and providing recommendations for improvements in legislation and government policies through consultations with both academic and industrial experts.
  • Multi-dimensional Approach:To engage in research on IP laws in partnership with national and international entities, including corporations, law firms, government bodies, public sector undertakings, judicial institutions, and educational organizations.
  • Curriculum Development and cognitive enhancement: To organize various training and outreach programs in collaboration with leading  global , national and state-level institutions, such as specialized master’s courses, certificate programs (both short-term and long-term), diplomas, seminars, and conferences, aimed at benefiting students, academics, and practitioners.
