Intra-University Speech Competition 2024

The 2nd Intra-University Speech Competition 2024 was successfully conducted on December 9, 2024, organised by the Literary & Debating Society (LDS) NLUT, under the guidance of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh. The goal was to cultivate competent communicators and orators while also instilling confidence, critical thinking, and presentation skills among the students. The event was honored by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Nachiketa Mittal, the Registrar of NLU Tripura, who underlined the importance of strong communication and oratory skills in helping a lawyer stand out in court. The LDS expressed gratitude to the competition judges, including Ms. Aparajita Bannerjee (Assistant Registrar, NLU Tripura), Dr. Jayanta Dhar (Assistant Professor of Law, NLUT), Mr. Simul Chakraborty (Assistant Librarian, NLUT), and Ms. Dipika Jamatia (Assistant Professor, Law, NLUT), for their valuable contributions. Ms. Merelin Darlong, LDS’s Faculty Advisor, coornidated along with a dedicated team of students. The LDS also assured that such events would be held annually to continue nurturing oratory skills among students.

HMJ Justice Biswajit Palit Inaugurated Freshers’ Day 2024 at NLU Tripura

NLU Tripura welcomed its Second Batch at a vibrant Freshers’ Day celebration on November 30, 2024. The program commenced with a formal Inaugural Ceremony wherein the Founding Vice-Chancellor, NLU Tripura, Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh, delivered a welcome address and emphasized the importance of upholding NLU Tripura’s values of academic excellence, inclusivity, and commitment to justice. Dr. Singh also outlined the important role played by HMJ Palit as the Secretary, Law Dept. during inception of the University. The event was inaugurated by the Hon’ble presence of Mr. Justice, Biswajit Palit, Judge, High of Tripura as the Chief Guest. In his motivating address, Justice Palit, urged the students to work hard tirelessly and achieve their goals and congratulated the administration for its remarkable progress in just 15 months of its inception. He also reiterated that High Court of Tripura will support NLUT in all possible ways. Ms. Swapna Shome, Principal, Bhavan’s Tripura Vidyamandir, attended as the Guest of Honour and shared her delight at witnessing the university’s growth. She expressed her enthusiasm for supporting and collaborating with NLU Tripura in the future. Shri Ashutosh Pandey, Director, Tripura Judicial Academy and Special Guest of the event, expressed his happiness in contributing to the university’s endeavors and growth. Ms. Merelin Darlong Faculty Advisor, Campus Cultural Committee, delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, who acknowledged the contributions of all participants.The celebration continued into the evening with a vibrant Cultural Night followed by DJ Night, leaving everyone with cherished memories of the celebration.

Online Panel Discussion on “The Role of Media in a Constitutional Democracy: Issues and Challenges.”

The Public Relations and Media Committee (PRMC) of National Law University Tripura conducted a successful Online Panel Discussion on “The Role of Media in a Constitutional Democracy: Issues and Challenges.” The Session’s Panelists included Prof. (Dr.) Krishan Mahajan, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Mr. Subir Bhaumik, Former BBC, Regional Bureau Chief, Mr. Jayanta Bhattacharya, President, Press Club & Consultant Journalist of PTI, Dr. Debraj Deb, Senior Copy Editor, The Indian Express Online, and Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh, the Vice Chancellor of NLU Tripura as the Moderator. Panelists discussed pivotal issues including Press Freedom Rankings, Media’s Role in Public Policy, Newsroom Representation, Media Training, Unbiased Reporting, and Promoting Intercommunal harmony. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A Session where participants engaged with the Panelists and sought clarification on the topics addressed. The event was Coordinated by Ms. Merelin Darlong, Faculty Advisor PRM along with a dedicated team of students.  The Panel Discussion was attended by registered participants including students, scholars and legal professionals from across India.

The 7th School Connect Programme

The 7th School Connect Programme for class 12 students was successfully held on October 30, 2024, at Nutan Nagar Girls Higher Secondary School in Agartala. The programme, entitled “Let us work together for the children of Tripura,” is an aspect of NLU Tripura’s ongoing efforts to empower students in the region and promote an interest in legal education. Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh, Vice-Chancellor of NLU Tripura, led the first session, emphasising the importance of fundamental duties and rights as citizens, as well as the wide range of legal profession opportunities available. The B.A LL. B (Hons.) students presented about the challenge of drug abuse among the younger generation and the implications of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, in which students actively participated and sought clarification on the issues addressed. Ms. Merelin Darlong, Assistant Professor of English at NLU Tripura and the event coordinator, attended the event with the Principal and teachers from the school.

The 3rd TDF Talk by Brigadier Manish Rana

National Law University Tripura (NLU-Tripura) hosted Brigadier Manish Rana, SM, Commander of Assam Rifles, as the distinguished speaker for the 3rd Tripura Dialogue Forum (TDF) Talk on October 28, 2024. Brigadier Rana delivered an insightful lecture on “The Armed Forces and Civic Responsibility,” addressing a large gathering of students, faculty, and local dignitaries at the university’s main auditorium. Brigadier Rana’s talk highlighted the profound relationship between the armed forces and civic responsibilities, especially in India’s Northeastern region, where the military’s role extends beyond defense to include community support, infrastructure development, and peacebuilding. The 3rd TDF Talk concluded with a vibrant Q&A session where students and faculty engaged Brigadier Rana on a range of issues, including civic-military cooperation and the role of law in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

On 17th October 2024, Dr. Jayanta Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Law from WBNUJS, Kolkata, delivered a special lecture as part of the LLM Programme’s Special Lecture Series on Research Methodology. The session focused on the multifaceted traits of action research within the field of law. Dr. Ghosh provided insights into the essential skills and methodologies required for conducting action research, emphasizing its practical significance. By drawing from various branches of law, he illustrated how action research can be effectively applied to address real-world legal issues, enhancing the students’ understanding of its implementation in the legal domain. This academic discussion was supervised and articulated under the flagship Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh and co-ordinated by Dr. Bandita Sengupta, Assistant Professor and Course Teacher of Research Methodology and Legal writing for LLM program at NLU Tripura.
