A State-Level Multi-Stakeholders Workshop on Tobacco Control Organized at NLU Tripura and VHAT

A State Level Multi-Stakeholders Workshop on Tobacco Control was organized by Voluntary Health Association of Tripura, Agartala and National Law University, Tripura in the premises of NLU Tripura at Narsingarh on 23 May 2025. The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from Health department, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, civil society organizations, legal experts, and youth advocates. The primary objective was to strengthen coordination among stakeholders, enhance the enforcement of tobacco control laws, and explore innovative legal and policy measures to curb tobacco use in the state. The inaugural session was graced by Smt. Kalyani Saha Roy, Hon’ble Chief Whip, Tripura Legislative Assembly, Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, Vice-Chancellor, NLU Tripura, Ms. Megha Jain, IAS, Additional District Magistrate, West Tripura, Dr. Abhijit Das, SPO, NTCP, Tripura and Dr. Sreelekha Ray, President, VHAT.

Key technical sessions were conducted by Shri Dipak Mishra, Executive Director, SEEDS, Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, VC NLU Tripura and Dr. Prashanta Majumder, Nodal Officer, TCC, Agartala Govt. Dental College. The session covered the enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, implementation of TOEFI Guidelines to make all educational institutions of Tripura a tobacco free campus, Article 5.3 FCTC, the impact of surrogate advertising by celebrities, and the role of local governance in tobacco control. Experts also called for improved awareness campaigns, community engagement, and stricter monitoring of tobacco-related advertisements. The event concluded with a collective resolution to foster stronger inter-sectoral cooperation and to advocate for a tobacco-free Tripura through sustained legal, educational, and policy interventions.

NLU Tripura bid farewell to the LLM Batch of 2024–2025 on 17th May 2025, marking the successful completion of yet another academic journey. The evening was graced by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh, who delivered a heartfelt message, urging the graduating scholars not to limit their legal careers solely to litigation or practice, but to consider academia as a vital and fulfilling path within the legal profession. He extended his best wishes for their bright and impactful futures. Faculty members and staff conveyed their warm regards and reflections through a special video presentation. The celebration continued with vibrant cultural performances, a lively DJ music, and a delightful dinner, making the evening a memorable one. The event was thoughtfully organised by the Campus Cultural Committee (CCC), the 1^st & 2^nd Year students, under the guidance of Ms. Merelin Darlong, Faculty Advisor, CCC. As these graduates step into the next chapter of their legal journey, NLU Tripura takes immense pride in sending off a batch of promising legal minds ready to contribute meaningfully to the world.

NLU Tripura Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Y.P. Singh Leads Awareness Program on POCSO, NDPS, and Career Opportunities in Law

Agartala, 07 May 2025 – National Law University Tripura under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Y.P. Singh, organized a legal awareness program at Bodhjung Higher Secondary School, Agartala for the students of class 10 & 12. The session focused on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the diverse career opportunities available in the field of law. Prof. Singh in his address emphasized the importance of fundamental rights and duties, urging students to embrace their responsibilities as informed and active citizens of India. He highlighted the growing relevance of legal education and encouraged the youth of Tripura to consider law as a rewarding career. “Lawyers are among the highest taxpayers in the country and play a pivotal role in societal development,” he stated. With the recent establishment of NLU Tripura as a premier legal institution in India, Prof. Singh invited aspiring students to seize the opportunity for quality legal education within their home state. He also underlined the need for greater awareness among teenagers on legal and health-related issues, setting the tone for the student-led presentations that followed.

Students from the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) 2nd Semester delivered engaging and informative presentations on the POCSO and NDPS Acts. They discussed the challenges faced by child victims of sexual offences, many of whom are unaware of their legal rights or lack the confidence to speak out. The session on the NDPS Act addressed the increasing prevalence of substance abuse among teenagers in Tripura, giving emphasis on the critical need for awareness and prevention. The sessions were well-received, with interactive discussions between speakers and the audience. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session. The event was part of NLUT’s School Connect Program under the theme, “Let us work together for the children of Tripura.” The initiative was well-supported by Bodhjung H.S. School, with attendees including Principal Shri Subrata Kumar Bhattacharjee, Vice-Principal Shri Nirmal Mitra, teachers, and students. The school authorities expressed their sincere appreciation to NLUT and requested similar future initiatives. Ms. Merelin Darlong, Assistant Professor of English and event coordinator, extended heartfelt thanks to all participants and wished the students continued success in their academic and personal pursuits.

The Center for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, National Law University, Tripura, organized a two-days’ workshop on “Police investigation, Arrest Bail and Police Discretion,” hosting Dr. Satyajit Mohanty, IPS Retd.; Former DGP, Odisha and currently Adjunct Professor at National Law University, Odisha, from 6th to 7th of March 2025. The workshop covered 7 Modules on Police and Criminal Justice Administration starting with Investigation by Police (FIR, Investigation, Collection of Evidence, Injury report, DNA Profiling, Post Mortem, Search, Seizure, TI parade, Confession, Custodial interrogation, Polygraphy, Narco-Analysis Test, Case Dairy, Chargesheet,); Arrest Detention, Custody, Remand and Bail, Rights of the Arrested Person, Police Discretion, Police Reforms. Certificates were awarded to students and faculty after successful completion. Dr. Jayanta Dhar, Assistant Professor of Law and Centre Director, coordinated the workshop.

A deep dive into the Delimitation of Electoral Constituencies, led by Ms. Mayuri Gupta, Milon K Banerji Senior Resident at Charkha and Mr. Anshul Dalmia, Research Fellow at Charkha unpacked the hidden crisis of outdated electoral boundaries and representation gaps. Topics included:

• The 84th Constitutional Amendment and the 1971 Census freeze
• Emerging North-South representation imbalance
• Risks of gerrymandering, SC/ST dilution, and federal tension
• Real-time simulations and data-driven analysis

National Law University, Tripura Organises 2nd Intra-University Moot Court Competition April 2025

National Law University, Tripura proudly hosted its 2nd Intra-University Moot Court Competition on the 12th and 13th of April 2025, under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh. The two-day event celebrated the spirit of courtroom advocacy and academic excellence, drawing enthusiastic participation from students across batches. The final round was graced by a distinguished bench comprising Hon’ble Mr. Justice S. G. Chattopadhyay (Retd.), Mr. A. K. Nath, Retired District and Sessions Judge, and Mr. Kohinur Bhattacharyya, Government Advocate, High Court of Tripura. Their presence added immense prestige and provided invaluable feedback rooted in rich legal and judicial experience.

The preliminary and semi-final rounds were judged by an esteemed panel of academicians from reputed legal institutions and prominent practising lawyers from the district courts and the High Court of Tripura. This dynamic blend of academic and professional insights offered participants a comprehensive exposure to both doctrinal knowledge and the real-world nuances of litigation practice. In the valedictory address, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh highlighted mooting as the lifeblood of legal education, a tradition deeply embedded in the legacy of NLUs across the nation. He reaffirmed the University’s unwavering commitment to nurturing well-rounded legal minds and building a strong ecosystem for practical legal training in the State of Tripura. The competition was meticulously organised by the Moot Court Society, under the able guidance of its Faculty Advisor, Dr. Ripon Bhattacharjee, whose dedication ensured the event’s resounding success.
